Robert Dunlap's documentary Xaviera Hollander, “The Happy Hooker” – Portrait of a Sexual Revolutionary screens Thursday at the Portage Theater.

Born in Indonesia in 1943, Hollander spent her early childhood in a Japanese prison camp.  After a stint as a secretary in Europe and at the Dutch consulate in New York she launched a wildly successful career as a call girl and later as a sex author.

Her 1971 memoir The Happy Hooker: My Own Story sold 20 million copies and her column "Call Me Madame" has run in Penthouse for 35 years.  Hollander, who claimed Alfred Hitchcock among her clients and was later deported from the U.S., has emerged as an unlikely icon of women's sexual empowerment.

A TV actor in the 60s, Dunlap's previous documentary is 2001's Beyond Vanilla: An Unforgettable Journey Into The Wilder Side Of Sex.  He was cited as a "fetish expert" by in June, asserting that David Carradine did not appear to have been alone at the time of his mysterious death in Thailand.

Portrait of a Sexual Revolutionary screens Thursday at 7:30 PM at the Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee.  (773) 736-4050.
