Chicago actor and single father Ben Byer was given five years to live when he was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disease ALS at age 31 in 2002.

Byer, whom I profiled last year for the Reader, spent the next six years documenting his physical deterioration, his family relationships, and his globespanning search for alternative treatments for the disease.  He died last July, just days before his film about that journey, Indestructible, had its local theatrical premiere.

A year later, Rebeccah Rush, Byer's sister and the film's producer, continues to self-distribute the film and raise awareness about ALS, the ongoing search for a cure or even effectiveness treatments.  Rush hosts Indestructible Art, an exhibition and concert tonight to benefit the nonprofit ALS Film Fund.  Indestructible Art features an auction of work inspired by the film, by 20 painters and sculptors, including Rush herself; a screening of the trailer; and a solo piano performance by Body Worlds composer Chad Willetts.  $50 admission includes wine an light fare.  It's tonight at 6 PM at the Millenium Knickerbocker Hotel Crystal Ballroom, 136 E. Walton.  Call 312/751-8100.
