How does the tiny, always fringy, currently nomadic Curious Theatre Branch manage to snag broadcast celebrity Ira Glass for its benefit shows? Curious founder Beau O'Reilly says they go back to the days when the Curious folk were playing Club Lower Links in their rock band manifestation, Maestro Subgum and the Whole. Glass would hang out to hear them, and he eventually did a piece on the band for NPR that never aired. He also did a number of live broadcasts from Lunar Cabaret when that was Curious's home, invited O'Reilly to contribute pieces for his shows, and joined the Curious Theatre board of directors. Now that he's based in New York and doing television, they're grateful to get him for the occasional one-night--or one-afternoon--stand. One's coming up this weekend: Glass will join Maestro Subgum and the Whole for a Curious benefit concert at Sunday June 7, 3 PM, at the School of the Art Institute Ballroom, 112 S. Michigan. $20, reservations recommended, 773-508-0666.
