Local cornetist Josh Berman is a mainstay of the local jazz and improvised-music scene. In addition to programming the Sunday-night series at the Hungry Brain he belongs to a long list of strong local bands: Jason Adasiewicz's Rolldown, Fast Citizens, Chicago Luzern Exchange, Slow Cycle, Lucky 7s, Paul Giallorenzo's Get In to Go Out, and Keefe Jackson's Project Project among them.

A couple weeks ago he finally released his first album under his own name, Old Idea (Delmark). Tonight at the Hideout his fine quintet--with Adasiewicz on vibes, Jackson on reeds, Anton Hatwich on bass, and Marc Riordan on drums--plays the first of several release-related shows. I have a profile of Berman in this week's Reader.

Today's playlist:

Wu Fei, Yuan (Tzadik)
Bachelorette, My Electric Family (Drag City)
Dave Brubeck Quartet, Dave Digs Disney (Columbia/Legacy)
Cobra Verde, Haven't Slept All Year (Scat)
Ingrid Laubrock & Liam Noble, Let's Call This (Babel)
