This past weekend I stopped by Embellish in Lincoln Square/North Center for an upcoming issue of the Reader and wound up falling in love with the work of Etta Kostick, who makes stained-glass earrings, necklaces, and cuffs with a decided painterly character. Some of the square and rectangular earrings remind me of the stripped-down horizons of Mark Rothko, while the heavy, striking cuffs (none of which are currently pictured on Kostick's site) are like a Mondrian painting gone all askew.

I'm not even that much of a cuff person, but I bought one. At $120, it was a bit of a splurge for me--but reasonable for a one-of-a-kind, handmade piece. Or at least that's how I rationalized it. Earrings run about $50. Kostick will also create custom pieces if you've got a specific color scheme in mind.
