Art Institute of Chicago president James Cuno told the Chicago Tribune yesterday that his new big dream is to make the museum free to the public (which, by the way, is already supporting it in part through a $6.5 million annual donation from the Chicago Park District). That's not an original idea, and it's a little weird given the AIC's recent 50 percent admission fee hike, but it's a welcome one. Cuno says it'll take an additional endowment of about $250 million to cover the $12.5 million the museum collects in admission fees. On the heels of the $410 million campaign for the Modern Wing, and in the current economy, they might have to resurrect Eloise W. Martin or Julius Rosenwald to get it done.
