Kyle Gann, Cory Smythe, and more upcoming classical

Posted By on 05.26.09 at 11:57 AM

Marc Geelhoed has a nice roundup of upcoming classical events, including the return of critic and composer Kyle Gann--a former Reader freelancer--to Chicago to lecture on John Cage. Browsing through his Reader pieces, I'm now going to check out Henry Gwiazda. Also, this really caught my eye:

"[Cory] Smythe will always be remembered (by me, at least) for getting Messiaen on a beat-up bar piano to sound like Messiaen on the world’s greatest Steinway. He and Greenberg play the Gyorgys (Kurtag and Ligeti) and Stravinsky at the Sherwood Conservatory...."

If you've watched Kubrick, you've probably heard Ligeti. Musica ricercata made Eyes Wide Shut for me.
