Today in alt-rock, hip-hop, and good ideas

LA duo Bleu Collar are amazingly the first hip-hop group--as far as I'm aware--to jack the brilliant, demented beat to "Machine Gun" from Portishead's freaky-dark album 3, but it is an extremely good idea and I would be thrilled if more rappers got in on it.

On the opposite coast, NYC crew Old Money have just released a track called "Henry VIII" that samples "Heads Will Roll" from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' new record. They describe it as "kind of what happens when you've been listening to It's Blitz! and watching The Tudors obsessively," which is exactly the sort of bizarre set of influences that makes me extremely happy.
