The 14th Annual Asian American Showcase continues this week with Jennifer Phang's Bay Area family drama Half-Life, laden with animated fantasy sequences and featuring onetime Chicagoan Ben Redgrave as the young hero's suspicious father figure.  (Redgrave was recently profiled in my Reader article about the local shoot of the film Polish Bar, which film Redgrave co-wrote.)  Half-Life premiered at Sundance last year.  It's Saturday at 8 PM and Monday at 6 PM.

Two local filmmakers screen shorts in the "Across the Cultural" Divide program Saturday at 3 PM: Ai Lene Chor presents her film Tiffin, shot in her native Malaysia, and Columbia professor Wenhwa Ts'ao will be present with her film Arithmetic Lessons.

The festival closes with Treeless Mountain, So Yong Kim's followup to her international festival hit and School of the Art Institute thesis film In Between Days.  After depicting Korean immigrants in Toronto in In Between Days, Kim returns to her native country for Treeless Mountain, with a tale of two little girls on the loose in Seoul. It's Thursday, April 16 at 8:15 PM.

And my film The First Breath of Tengan Rei plays tonight at 8:15 PM.  All screenings are at the Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. State St.

Here's the Half-Life trailer:
