4/9, 4/11 -- Free performances by members of the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra

While the Friday performance at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra of the much-hyped Simon Dudamel-conducted Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela is sold out, the rehearsal Thursday from 3 to 5 PM at Symphony Center (220 S. Michigan) is free and open to the public, though priority will be given to student groups (reservations required).

In addition, sections of the Orchestra perform for free around the city Thursday and Saturday in smaller ensembles:

Trumpet Ensemble - 11 AM Thursday at Northeastern Illinois University's Salme Harju Steinberg Fine Arts Center, 5500 N. Saint Louis.

Brass Ensemble - 7 PM Thursday at Little Village Lawndale High School, 3120 S. Kostner Ave.

Chamber Orchestra - 7 PM Thursday at the Merit School of Music, 38 S. Peoria. To request tickets, e-mail rsvp@meritmusic.org with the subject line, "4/9 Concert Ticket Request." There is a limit of 2 tickets per email address. Also Saturday 4/11 at 1 PM at Ravinia's Bennett-Gordan Hall, Highland Park.

Woodwind Quintet - 7 PM Thursday at the DePaul University Recital Hall, 804 W. Belden.

String Quartet - 11:30 AM Saturday at Columbia College's Sherwood Conservatory of Music, 1312 S. Michigan. Also 2 PM Saturday at the People's Music School, 931 W. Eastwood.
