In its going on three years of existence, Record Store Day has become a pretty important holiday, attaining among record geeks a level of importance equal with Labor Day or the Day Cliff Burton Died. In case you're not familiar with the event, it's a way to celebrate the continued existence of independent record stores, mostly through live in-store performances and special limited-edition releases that will only be sold through participating stores on the day itself, which is April 18 this year.

Sometime before the 18th the Reader will be compiling a roundup of special events at local participating stores--about 20 so far, and what plans I've heard about sound pretty cool--but you can already check out a comprehensive list of the day's exclusive releases at the official Record Store Day site. There's lots and lots of very cool-looking vinyl involved--along with a bunch of CDs and T-shirts--including some interesting-sounding MC5 and Stooges reissues, a Slayer seven-inch with a song about Russian serial killer Andrei Chikatilo, a set of nine Jesus Lizard seven-inches, and an unreleased Pavement concert album from a show in 1988.
