Don't call 'em harem pants

If you are of a certain age, you may know them as Hammer pants. Brandon Frein, the woman behind the locally based fashion e-tail site and fashion blog, prefers to call them soft pants. But let's not be coy: this is a look that Scheherazade herself might not have found unfamiliar. ( was having some technical difficulties when this was being posted; if you get a placeholder page, try back later.)

It's a style that's been cropping up overseas for a while now, and it was all over the runway at New York's Fashion Week in the fall. But sometimes it takes a while for the eyes to adjust to a new proportion--especially here in Chicago, where we do tend to embrace more outré trends a little later. A writer on Lucky's eBay blog posits that they "disguise all of your lumpy bits and bring attention to a small waist and calves." The problem is that the wide hips and tapered ankles of this style create an "ice cream cone" silhouette--like an inverted triangle--and if you're legs aren't long enough, that width is going to cost you.

I admit that the slightly modified versions on look new and summery (at least on the lovely model). If you think so too, be aware that the site is sponsoring a Lucky Breaks deal through the end of the month--enter code MAR09DEAL at checkout and save 20 percent--even on sale items.
