Eric Zorn on the latest Westboro Baptist Church stunt: "My first instinct is to ignore these people -- they so nakedly crave attention -- yet it does occasionally seem worth pointing a contemptuous finger in their direction."

I don't think it much matters either way. I suspect they'll do what they're going to do whether you pay attention to them or not, so you kind of have to suffer them as one of the burdens of living in a free society. I lost interest in Westboro for that reason a long time ago, but I do highly recommend the BBC documentary "The Most Hated Family In America" by Louis Theroux (son of Paul) as a surprisingly empathetic look at the Phelps clan. You can watch it on YouTube. It's quite good, as are his other documentary works.
