The Chicago Symphony Orchestra's recording of Shostakovich's Symphony no. 4, conducted by Bernard Haitink, took the prize for best orchestral performance at the Grammy Awards yesterday. No surprise to us--this recording was the subject of a story I wrote for the Reader last fall, when it was issued by the orchestra's own CSO Resound label, packaged with an equally outstanding bonus DVD that puts the music into historical context. A second Grammy, for best-engineered classical album, went to David Frost, Tom Lazarus, and Christopher Willis for their work on another CSO Resound disc, Traditions and Transformations: Sounds of Silk Road Chicago. They're the first for the in-house label, launched less than two years ago.
