Both the Chicago Blues Festival and Chicago Jazz Festival will take place over three days rather than four next year, a result of citywide budget cuts. They'll also have fewer stages for performances. No word yet on how or whether the 2009 World Music Festival will be affected. It gets only about 60 percent of its budget from the city, though--even if that funding isn't cut, it could be hit hard if sponsors hurt by the tanking economy pull out.

At a recent City Council budget hearing, Megan McDonald, executive director of the Mayor's Office of Special Events, said in a written statement that the festivals cost more to operate than they bring in each year, and that "stages, tents, service areas and contractual services" will also have their costs reexamined so further cuts can be made.
