Uwe Schmidt, a German-born DJ and producer, achieved his greatest stateside fame under the name Señor Coconut after moving to Chile and devoting himself to the study of Latin music. And his best-known achievement is still a hilarious midair collision between stereotypes: El Baile Aleman, an Esquivel-damaged, percussion-laden tribute to Kraftwerk. (Schmidt is credited as "Atom Heart" here.) Released in 2000, it got a lot of buzz, mostly because it was far, far better than it had any right to be, given its concept. This wickedly listenable album is getting reissued in November by Nacional Records, along with a new album, Around the World, which will pay tribute to club hits by the likes of Daft Punk, the Eurythmics, and Prince.
