The second annual Hyde Park Jazz Festival happens this Saturday at several venues, including the Checkerboard Lounge, the DuSable Museum, and the Hyde Park Art Center. The whole shebang, which runs from noon past midnight, with almost 30 separate performances, is free. The lineup provides an excellent overview of south-side jazz these days, ranging from stalwarts of the AACM (Nicole Mitchell, Kahil El’Zabar) to mainstream greats (John Wright, Willie Pickens) with lots of killer players in-between (Fred Anderson, pictured; Ari Brown; Orbert Davis). Here's the fest's own site.

Today’s playlist:

Quiet Sun, Mainstream (Expression/Virgin)
Alvin Lucier, Vespers and Other Early Works (New World)
Sandy Posey, A Single Girl: The Very Best of the MGM Recordings (RPM)
Haco & Sakamoto Hiromichi, Ash in the Rainbow (Detector/ReR)
Flying Lotus, Reset (Warp)
