Religion makes for great copy

Two Reader contributors have been collected in Submersion Journalism: Reporting in the Radical First Person From Harper's Magazine.

Jeff Sharlet wrote about doctors and death for the Reader; he comes to town in October for the Freedom of Religion Convention. Here's a discussion about the Harper's piece that's in the collection, which led to his book, The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power.

Jay Kirk, who wrote for the Reader about, among other things, evangelical ventriloquism and a Pepsiholic (Pepsi as religion), is represented by a piece on a kinky undertaker.
