Ninety years ago a train wreck near Hammond, Indiana, killed 56 artists and crew members of the traveling Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus. They were interred at Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park, in an area designated as Showmen's Rest, and the show went on. Every year a memorial is staged at the site, where circus performers are still buried; this year's is Sunday, August 3, from 1 to 3 PM.

A formal ceremony with speakers and the laying of flowers will be followed by circus acts and activities. The event is free (including snacks and drinks), but bring something to sit on. Clowns, acrobats, jugglers, and other circus artists are invited to come in costume and perform.

Woodlawn Cemetery is located at 7750 W. Cermak in Forest Park. Showmen's Rest is at the graveyard's western end.
