If you have a smart idea about where the American newspaper industry is heading, here's where to take it. The Encyclopaedia Britannica is running a forum this week, Are Newspapers Doomed? (Do We Care?): Newspapers & the Net Forum. The site will post essays by journalists, scholars, and bloggers who will be reading and responding to each other, and the public is invited to join in. The first two essays are already up: "The Great Unbundling: Newspapers & the Net," by Nicholas Carr, and "What Newspapers and Journalism Need Now: Experimentation, Not Nostalgia," by Clay Shirky. Shirky predicts "publishers lobbying for federal support on national security grounds. This will happen within two years."
