Over at the Washington City Paper, former Reader editor Mark Athitakis calls out season 5 of The Wire for botching the problems of contemporary journalism. Which raises the question: who is doing good, honest street journalism? Fortunately, some of it's coming from Chicago, both from big names and from people you've probably heard but maybe haven't heard of. I'm thinking in particular of Dan Collison and Elizabeth Meister, proprietors of Long Haul Productions and two of America's best radio journalists. Their Homeplace series, in particular "Movin' Out the Bricks" and "Public Housing Relocator," contains exemplary works of the kind The Wire creator David Simon values, examining the interactions between institutions, the individuals that comprise them, and the modern American city. Do give them a listen.
