Too much of nothing makes a man ill at ease

Robert Powers has a thoughtful post at A Chicago Sojourn about the area around Cook County Hospital, my least favorite part of the city. He writes: "A dense, walkable urban environment has become a wasteland of vast parking lots and roaring limited-access lanes. Whatever happens to Cook County Hospital, the most vital battle was lost long ago." I spent a very long year working a couple blocks west of the hospital, across the street from the morgue, and the only fun to be had was watching traffic jams build on the Ike outside my office window; the amount of nothing there is tough to imagine, but Powers's pictures will give you a taste. Chicago-l.org has an amazingly detailed history of the Medical Center Blue Line stop.
