The City Council was especially active this week. Here are a few of the most insightful comments from its esteemed members. --Ben Joravsky and Mick Dumke

Twenty-seventh Ward alderman Walter Burnett, addressing concerns that TIFs take money away from the schools and other public entities: “We take money from a lot of folks."

Thirty-third Ward alderman Dick Mell, on his daughter Deb’s primary campaign for state rep from the 40th district, which he made sure had no other candidates: “I think she’s going to win. As a matter of fact, I can guarantee it.”

Thirty-first Ward alderman Ray Suarez, taking a philosophical stand on how the city’s Department of Administrative Hearings should deliver justice: “I think everyone deserves a fair hearing, and not everyone is guilty.”

Eleventh Ward alderman James Balcer, defending the Department of Administrative Hearings: “Whenever I went into the department, I found the people there to be competent. So there was some fairness there.”

Twenty-ninth Ward alderman Ike Carothers, on the independence of new police chief Jody Weis: “I don’t think he’ll be beholden to anyone. He’s not a product of Chicago politics or anything like that.”

A close ally of Mayor Daley’s who didn’t want his name used, explaining why he planned to sign off on the mayor's new picks to head several city departments: “I think the city’s executive should get to pick his own cabinet. You have to be responsible for the people who work under you.”
