"You prick-eating bastard!"

That's one, and surprisingly the most dated, epithet from a charming anti-swearing memo distributed to National League baseball players in 1898, which is now up for auction. The sentence structure is unsurprisingly elaborate, but otherwise the words, and the sentiments behind them, are basically the same. Baseball: it's timeless. Or, as my friend S. put it: "I'm shocked swearing has changed so little in the last century. Although maybe ballplayers are so next-level about cursing that today's players are innovating crazy swearing we won't find out about until 2100."
