Clicking on the least interesting headline on Thursday in the Tribune's local news, I found a gem of a small drama, in the conclusion of a story about the opening of an OTB in Homewood.

Hacko, 59, was not so lucky. At about 2:45 p.m., he was seated outside the front door, explaining why it was important to him to be the pub's first bettor.

"It's a landmark, a privilege to be first on anything," Hacko said. "This isn't really high on anybody's list of first things to be at, but for me it is."

Two minutes later, an employee came out and told Hacko he needed an invitation to get inside before 6 p.m.

"That's B.S.," Hacko said. "That's the kind of garbage they pull -- they're gonna let all the big shots come in and pull all the status out of it for the poor, broke-down pony players like me. I'll never be back."

--"And they're off! at Homewood OTB," Matthew Walberg Chicago Tribune, 10/25/07
