JAMA, the NYT, and the Trib join the MRSA beat

The Reader's most recent cover story, "Releasing the Disease" by Kelly Virella, details problems with a virulent staph infection, community-associated methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA, or just MRSA), at Cook County Jail and in Chicago hospitals. With the release today of a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association about the status of the infection throughout the country, finding that it killed almost 19,000 people in 2005 (more than AIDS), the Trib and the New York Times are now on the MRSA beat.

In related news, a blue-ribbon committee appointed by Todd Stroger is set to recommend that Cook County cede control of its health system
