Let's see if I can make Lynn Becker's head explode: The Oak Brook-based McDonald's Corporation, when seeding its own backyard with mass-produced beef depots, gives us cornball "themed" restaurants like the dumpy sports McDonald's on State and the Hollywood McDonald's on 55th. The huge cubic-zirconia jewel in its Chicagoland lineup is the new-ish Rock 'n' Roll McD's on Ontario, which Becker calls "the kind of triumph of gesture over content that's the very definition of kitsch."

What do they get in London? An inviting, kindergarten-modern atmosphere with Arne Jacobsen chairs.

Perhaps we could get something in the Prairie style; after all, Frank Lloyd Wright wasn't above designing the odd gas station
