May we please criticize your show now?

The debate continues over when it's OK for critics to watch and review new plays. Last year's squabble was between the Sun-Times's Hedy Weiss (left) and the Dramatists Guild over a festival of new musicals at the Theater Building. This year's pitted the Tribune's Chris Jones against Steppenwolf over that theater's First Look Repertory of New Work. "The Business" columnist Deanna Isaacs has been keeping watch .

Now drama critic Terry Teachout, citing Isaacs's column, just weighed in in the Wall Street Journal, writing, "I'm of two minds." He respects a theater's desire for privacy when it's developing a new play, but if the theater's selling tickets to that play critics have a right to tell consumers what they're buying.
