* Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk reads Wednesday at Borders on Michigan. If you go, be aware that Palahniuk is holding a contest at each reading on his tour, in honor of a plot point from Rant (his new novel). To participate, you have to wear a wedding dress, no matter what your gender. The winner gets "a spectacular gift."

* Continuing the theme of prominent writers with unpronounceable names, one of my favorite journalists, William Langewiesche, is speaking Tuesday at the University of Chicago about his just-released The Atomic Bazaar: The Rise of the Nuclear Poor. Langewiesche, the son of Wolfgang Langewiesche, a pilot and author of the flight-instruction classic Stick and Rudder, got his start writing about airplanes, and he's brought an analytical gift for systems to his increasingly diverse subject matter. Check out his masterful Atlantic article "The Shipbreakers," about an enormous Indian ship junkyard, here.

* To judge from online previews, Jerry Springer--The Opera, making its U.S. debut (!) at Bailiwick Repertory, is as good as advertised.

* The Chicago History Museum is throwing a 95th birthday party for Studs Terkel on Wednesday, featuring the man himself and hosted by the Trib's Rick Kogan. I've mentioned this before, but the recordings at are the best way to explore Chicago while stuck at your desk. (h/t Gapers Block)

* This pic by Pantagrapher totally gets me.
