Teacher Lady, blogging at Sex Ed in Higher Ed, tells a story that ends with a manager telling her he prefers managing women than men. She can't quite believe the moral of the story:

"Most men think they're better than they actually are, and most women think they're worse than they actually are."

Thus, most students who do badly on a test and then protest their grade are said to be men. I'm personally familiar with chess players, who are almost all male, and almost all of them believe that the highest chess rating they've ever achieved kind of understates their real strength. So, is this true across the board, or do we just expect guys to be this way? Or is it just an obvious consequence of patriarchy, end of story?
