December's low-angle sunlight flatters everything it touches: tree trunks, the half-built Trump tower, crushed beer cans. As Wallace Stevens, who was also an insurance executive, put it:

A dirty house in a gutted world,
A tatter of shadows peaked to white,
Smeared with the gold of the opulent sun.
