What happens when you can't live with "live and let live"?

A couple of quotes from the UK's Guardian provoke me to wonder: If my right to swing my arms ends where your face begins, what happens when you define your face to include the whole world?

Sultanah Parvin, a teacher and member of Hizb ut-Tahrir: "Islam is not compatible with Western concepts of freedom and choice -- they would include the right of women to wear a miniskirt. From an Islamic point of view we don't agree with that."

Joan Smith: "The niqab [a form of veil] affects me and other women who don't wear it because it represents a return to medieval religious notions of female modesty, which deny women access to public space on the same terms as men. Puritanism is dangerous in all its forms."

Invoking "tolerance" doesn't seem to get us very far in this case.
