The obvious thing would have been to mention this in my previous post: Steve Reich turns 70 today. There are lots of birthday celebrations happening all over the country, and Northwestern University is hosting one tonight. New Music Northwestern and the Contemporary Music Ensemble are presenting a selection of his works: Pendulum Music, Clapping Music, Piano Phase, Violin Phase, New York Counterpoint, Nagoya Marimbas, and Eight Lines. The concert is at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall at 7:30 PM tonight.

Also celebrating a birthday today is Chicago tenor saxophone legend Von Freeman; he's 84.
