critics' choices True Theater Critic Half-Polish, half-Malian avant-garde artist Omar Sangare is a performer of astonishing control and grace. In this stream-of-consciousness tour de force, which got him the nod for best actor at the 1997 New York International Fringe Festival, he dismantles the critic’s craft and persona but goes on to pretty much take apart theater altogether. In the high eastern European style, Sangare’s autopsy is by turns passionate, exhausted, hilarious, and transcendentally dismayed. But for all its teeth gnashing and intellectuality, it’s also a gorgeously choreographed, masterfully executed movement piece that speaks directly to the senses. (Brian Nemtusak) Performed in English. arrow Theatre Building, 8 PM.

R Self (The Remix) Chicago-based poetry slam champ Robert Karimi’s brisk autobiographical monologue is based on the notion that personality is created through sampling and blending. Karimi’s candor in discussing his Iranian-Guatemalan heritage is refreshing, but his easygoing manner belies a lingering discomfort as he recounts daily beatings at school during the Iran hostage crisis and his discovery of rap music—a lifeline—at the onset of puberty. (Nick Green) arrow Breadline, 8 PM.

Man 1, Bank 0 Patrick Combs’s solo show recounts what happened when he cashed one of those fake checks you get in the mail. arrow Theatre Building, 8 PM.
