Submitting Display Ads to the Chicago Reader Electronically

Web Submission of Ads

Now advertisers can upload their display ads directly to the  Chicago Reader through an easy to use secure Web page.  To use this service, your sales representative must first establish an account for you.  You will then receive instructions and login information via email.  To get started, please contact your sales representative directly at 312-828-0350.

All ads must be in Adobe® Acrobat® PDF Format

The Chicago Reader is capable of handling electronic submission of your display ads in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. In order to ensure that your ads appear as you intend, we must emphasize that we will only accept electronic submission of display ads in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. If you want to create your ads in any other format, we suggest that you give your ad files to a service bureau who will output them as a velox or film negative. For those interested in learning more about Adobe Acrobat PDF format, you can find some information on Adobe's web site at http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/adobepdf.html

When creating Adobe Acrobat PDF display ad files for the Chicago Reader they must be black and white and must have the fonts embedded, any halftone artwork must be at a resolution sufficient to print out using an 85line halftone screen (typically at least 180 dpi). This avoids problems with remembering to submit fonts with the ad files. The PDF format also assures platform independence, no matter what kind of computer generated your ad.

When submitting display ads to the Chicago Reader, do not compress the raw PDF files in any manner. Please do not zip (.zip) them, binhex (.hqx) them, stuff (.sit) them, self-extracting archive (.sea) them, etc. We will only accept ads that are in a PDF (.pdf) file format. We will not attempt to reverse your compression or archiving of files. If what you are sending us is a file that you are not personally able to open immediately in Adobe Acrobat Reader then we will not be able to do it either.

If you are submitting an ad electronically, you must reserve space by 5 p.m. Friday preceding Thursday publication. The preferred deadline for receipt of the ad itself is also 5 p.m. Friday, but, if necessary, we can accept the ad until 1 p.m. Monday.

There are five ways in which you can submit your display ads electronically to the Chicago Reader.

  • Via the Chicago Reader Ad Server (contact your sales representative at 312-828-0350 to establish your account)
  • Via AP AdSEND (http://www.adsend.com
  • Via Chicago Reader's FTP site (ftp.chicagoreader.com)
  • Via a MIME encoded e-mail file attachment (displayads@chicagoreader.com
  • Via a 100 MB Zip disk if the files are in Adobe Acrobat PDF format

NOTE: If the following does not make sense then most likely you're going to find electronic ad submission more of a headache than a timesaver. These instructions assume a familiarity with electronic file transmission techniques and will not explain everything you need to know. If you're unsure of how to proceed after reading the following then we suggest you send the display ad as a velox or film negative via courier.

Via Chicago Reader Ad Server

Now advertisers can upload their display ads directly to the  Chicago Reader through an easy to use secure Web page.  To use this service, your sales representative must first establish an account for you.  You will then receive instructions and login information via email.  To get started, please contact your sales representative directly at 312-828-0350.

Via AP AdSEND (http://www.adsend.com)

AP AdSEND is a service of the Associated Press that can be used to deliver PDF display ads to the Chicago Reader. Those unfamiliar with the AP AdSEND service can obtain information from the AP web site at http://www.adsend.com or call 1-800 2ADSEND. The newspaper code for the Chicago Reader is ILCCR.

Via Chicago Reader's FTP site (ftp.chicagoreader.com)

The Chicago Reader operates an anonymous FTP site for the use of our display advertisers. You may submit an Adobe Acrobat PDF display ad file to the FTP site using any FTP client. Common FTP clients are WS_FTP for Windows (http://www.ipswitch.com/Products/WS FTP/) or Fetch for Macintosh (http://fetchsoftworks.com). The particulars of our FTP site are as follows (please note that these are case sensitive):

  • FTP site: ftp.chicagoreader.com
  • login: anonymous
  • password: <your e-mail address>
  • directory: /pub/advertiser

Before sending the file, make sure that the filename ends in a '.pdf' extension. You also have to select binary transmission mode for FTP transfer or the file will be corrupted during transmission. If you're unsure of whether or not the file was successfully transmitted, download the file yourself which you just sent to the FTP site. If you're not able to successfully open the downloaded file in Adobe Acrobat Reader then we won't be able to either.

Once the file has been sent to the Chicago Reader's FTP site you must call your Sales Rep or someone in the Display Ad Department at (312) 828-0350 to let them know the file is available and what the filename is. We do not check the FTP site for new files, instead we rely on you to tell us that your display ad file is waiting.

Via a MIME encoded e-mail file attachment (displayads@chicagoreader.com)

You can submit your Adobe Acrobat PDF display ads as MIME encoded e-mail file attachments to displayads@chicagoreader.com. MIME is a way of transmitting binary files via e-mail over the internet. Most email systems support it, although yours may not. If you're unsure of your ability to send MIME encoded e-mail file attachments then send us a PDF file as a test well ahead of the Chicago Reader's deadlines. We will e-mail you an acknowledgement when your ad file has been successfully received.

Via a 100 MB Zip disk if the files are in Adobe Acrobat PDF format

You can submit your display ads as individual files on a l00 MB Zip disk. We must reemphasize that we will only accept ad files in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. As an aid in locating your files, include a hardcopy of your ad filenames, a brief description of their content, and their location on the disk. We will not automatically send the disk back to you.
