  CRITICS' CHOICE

CHIP KIDDGraphic designer Chip Kidd made his name in book covers but emerged as a talented novelist in 2001, with his coming-of-age story The Cheese Monkeys. His new novel, The Learners (Scribner), continues the tale of Happy, an art student turned entry-level adman who follows his mentor to a small agency in New Haven. One of his first assignments is to design an ad for a research study that turns out to be Stanley Milgram's infamous "obedience" experiments, in which an alarming percentage of subjects obeyed an authority figure who instructed them to inflict pain on an innocent victim; Happy himself eventually becomes a participant. Kidd uses his narrative to investigate the relationships between form and content, authority and advertising -- and the result is less Mad Men than a hammy pop update on Don DeLillo. Kidd's characters, like DeLillo's, lack depth. But his pointed observations on design and mass culture make this short novel a compelling read. --> Wed 5/14, 7 PM, Quimby's Bookstore, 1854 W. North, 773-342-0910. --Whet Moser .
