Dress for the Mess
June 8, 2007
MEG MCCARVILLE, 26, is a writer and unemployed outreach worker.
She performs music under the name Little Princess.
Describe your style.
I like Japanese freak clothes and stuffed animals and kids’ stuff. And messes. I like masks and costumes. I like things that don’t go together, and stripes. I like the way clowns look. So that’s what I would hope my style looks like.
What informs this aesthetic?
It’s hard to say exactly but basically I live in a shithole and it’s hard a lot of the time to put outfits together or to look very nice. Whether I make stuff, create stuff,
or wear stuff, it always winds up being dirty and messy and thrown together. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
Where do you get most of your clothes?
Thrift stores, the garbage, Forever 21, and sometimes H&M. Tell me about what you’re wearing today.
The striped shirt, my mom bought it
for me for Easter to look nice for my
family. The tutu is my favorite thing
to wear. Sunday morning I was hungover and I threw up all over it and so I had
to clean it, which was kind of hard to
do. I had to soak it but it’s fine now.
The leg warmers, I got them at a beauty supply store at Kedzie and Chicago. It’s my favorite place to shop—they have the best accessories that are really cheap.
What are you working on right now?
I’ve been writing for sexwrecks.com
and mrskin.com. I’m working on a book called 69 Reasons I Should Have Been Aborted. Each chapter is one of the reasons. I’m working to get back into outreach work; I got laid off because
the organization lost funding. I’m in
a movie that is coming out in August, Dead American Woman. I play a scared insane crazy girl. Other than that, I sit at home a lot and eat Church’s Fried Chicken. Oh, and I’m applying for food stamps. That’s my goals. It’s all working out pretty well. —Jessica Hopper
