I CAN’T COUNT the number of times I’ve walked into a
high-end boutique only to be disappointed by the meager
offerings—as if the owners forgot that shoppers’
primary purpose is to find something to wear, not to
attend a gallery opening. Kaveri Satpathy knows that
women like to browse, so she’s filled her spacious Lincoln
Park shop with enough clothing to keep you busy for more
than five minutes. A lot of the merch consists of goodlooking
basics geared toward the casual-dressy tastes of
the neighborhood—cashmere wrap sweaters, jeans, and the
like. But there are also attention getters sprinkled in the
mix: a silk lotus-print tunic by Edun ($253), a black wool toggle coat with white edging by Trovata ($375), a strapless
party dress of black-and-white flower-print silk with tweed
at the bust by Adam Plus Eve ($345). The jewelry selection
takes its cues from nature—gold and silver pieces with
leaf motifs by Danish designer Julie
Sandlau and necklaces with antler
charms by Alex and Chloe. Kaveri,
which opened in September, adds
to a growing shopping district around the intersection of
Webster and Racine, an incentive to walk a few blocks
north the next time you make the rounds of the Armitage
boutiques. —Heather Kenny
