Moody and thoughtful, this 2007 Argentinean drama is set in a coastal Uruguayan town, where a marine biologist (Ricardo Darin) and his wife have retreated from the world with their tomboyish daughter (Ines Efron). Both “tomboy” and “daughter” are approximations, though, because the child is a hermaphrodite, raised as a girl but increasingly inclined to male behavior. In a not-too-subtle gesture the parents have invited an accomplished surgeon to stay with them, along with his wife and teenage son, but the latter is more interesting to the daughter than any operation. Lucia Puenzo (whose father, Luis, directed The Official Story) approaches her sensational subject with admirable restraint, connecting solidly with the teen's unspoken but roiling emotions and the father's anguished love for a daughter who might prefer to be his son. In Spanish with subtitles. 86 min.
