Seven exhausted, conflicted members of the Women's Royal Naval Service hunker down in their tin hut on the eve of VE Day, knowing that peacetime will release them from years of sardine-like confinement—but also return them to civilian domestic irrelevance. Rivendell Theatre Ensemble revives the semiautobiographical play by Anne McGravie, with which the company debuted 16 years ago. Wrens dawdles through a first act of telling but undramatic character studies. Yet once McGravie introduces an ingeniously constructed moral crisis late in act one—a crisis that turns loyalty into criminality—it remains harrowing until its final moments. Director Karen Kessler's impeccably cast, exquisitely paced revival pays careful attention to the nuances of the women's forced cohabitation, making even the unfocused first act feel compellingly true. —Justin Hayford
