When a hotshot film director (Kim Seung-woo) drags his production designer (Kim Tae-woo) to a Korean beach resort, the designer foolishly brings along his lithe, clever girlfriend (Go Hyun-jung), who's immediately drawn into the director's sexual orbit. The setup of this 2006 feature is reminiscent of Godard's Contempt, but writer-director Hong Sang-soo—South Korea's foremost chronicler of romantic maneuvering—is more aptly compared to Eric Rohmer for his subtle comedy. Hong uses the director's amorous intrigues to expose his xenophobia and homophobia, as well as his skillful exploitation of his artistic mystique to excuse these prejudices and score with the ladies. In the movie's deft cosmic punch line, he's undone by a blossoming friendship between two of his conquests. In Korean with subtitles. 128 min.

Sorry there are no showtimes for Woman on the Beach on Sunday, November 22.
