Welcome to Wilmette

Dear editors:

Wilmette's NIMBY opposition to Northlight Theatre [Neighborhood News, June 17] has a precursor in the 19th century.

The town's citizenry virtually ejected an institution known as the Railroad Men's Home during the mid-1890s because they deemed it undesirable to their suburban pretensions.

The facility relocated to Highland Park in 1896. There it was welcomed, caring for 18 aged and disabled residents. Moreover, it earned praise in its new location for its "noble work."
