Heading home from a party one Friday night, semicloseted Russell (Tom Cullen) stops off at a gay bar, where he picks up the direct, proudly out Glen (Chris New). What begins as a one-night stand deepens, over the next two days, into a genuine romance as the young lovers embark on an epic dialogue that touches on the most profound questions of love, commitment, honesty, and identity. Writer-director Andrew Haigh, who's made several short films and one other feature while holding down big-studio editing gigs, allows the characters and their ideas to develop naturally, from casual pillow talk to a surprisingly incisive discussion of the straight world and its strictures. "Imagine if everybody was just open about what he did," Glen suggests at one point, and one measure of the movie's artfulness is that his words widen to include us all, even as they strike Russell at the secret center of his being.
