A middle-aged newspaper writer, recently laid off from his job, embarks on an ambitious canoe trip with his teenage son to retrace Marquette and Joliet's route from Michigan's Upper Peninsula to Saint Louis. This low-budget independent production may be amateurish in its father-son drama, but the regional locations are lovely and the dialogue full of informative tidbits about midwestern history. (I was fascinated to learn, for instance, that the Odawa Indians discovered hallucinogens in the bark of certain trees.) Robert Cicchini directed and stars as Steven Faulkner, the journalist who wrote the nonfiction book on which this is based.
