The opening credits by Saul Bass are the best part of this inept 1962 adaptation of Nelson Algren's novel. The setting is a New Orleans whorehouse, presided over by a Felliniesque Barbara Stanwyck; her girls include Capucine and Jane Fonda. If the material isn't titillating, it isn't anything—but director Edward Dmytryk might as well be shooting The Sound of Music. With Laurence Harvey and Anne Baxter.
