Soaps packed with artificial chemicals make us smell naturally clean. Organic produce springs from soil saturated in environmental toxins. Ecological stewardship means buying expensive "green" products from multibillion-dollar corporations that pollute, outsource, and drive down wages. In the irony-rich world of this 90-minute performance piece (coproduced by the Guild Literary Complex and Voice of the City), American environmentalism is shown to be as futile as it is fashionable, pitted against our unwavering pursuit of convenience, affordability, and privilege. Director Coya Paz shepherds eight unpolished but engaging performers through a series of poetic monologues and choral recitations that treat pressing global issues with pointed humor. Although Unnatural Spaces loses focus near the end—touching briefly on gang warfare, police brutality, and gentrification—it sparks the imagination and prods the conscience. —Justin Hayford
