University of Chicago Folk Festival 

The festival celebrates its 50th birthday with a weekend lineup that includes James King, Aaron Moore, Kim Wilson, and Liz Carroll.

The 50th annual University of Chicago Folk Festival, presented by the school's Folklore Society, runs Friday through Sunday and features evening concerts of folk, bluegrass, blues, and Celtic music at Mandel Hall (1131 E. 57th) on all three days and daytime workshops conducted by several of the artists in Ida Noyes Hall (1212 E. 59th) on Saturday and Sunday. Concerts begin at 8 PM on Friday, 7:30 PM on Saturday, and 6 PM on Sunday, and performers include blues pianist Aaron Moore, fiddler Liz Carroll, blues harmonica authority Kim Wilson (best known as a Fabulous Thunderbird), and singer and guitarist James King (described by the Reader's Peter Margasak as "one of the greatest voices in contemporary bluegrass"). The workshops—which include offerings for singers, instrumentalists, and dancers—run from 10 AM till 4:30 PM on Saturday and 11 AM till 4 PM on Sunday. Single-day tickets for Friday and Saturday are $25, $20 for seniors, and $10 for students; Sunday tickets are $20, $15 for seniors, and $10 for students. A weekend pass is $55, $45 for seniors.
