Despite fine performances by Diane Lane and Sandra Oh, this second feature by Audrey Wells (screenwriter of The Truth About Cats & Dogs) rises only slightly above the level of a Harlequin romance. Lane, an intelligent and careworn beauty, plays a successful novelist who's devastated when her husband unexpectedly leaves her for a younger woman; during a sightseeing tour of Tuscany she impulsively buys a decaying house in one of those Italian villages where people do nothing but drink good wine, eat good bread, and polish their little pearls of wisdom. I hate to knock a film of such noble intentions—ultimately Lane finds happiness not in the arms of an olive-skinned hunk but in giving of herself to others—but most of the time I wasn't sure whether this was a movie or a box of Frango mints. PG-13, 115 min.
