This engrossing low-budget video tells the story of Todd Loren, a pop-music fanatic and mail-order entrepreneur who struck gold in 1989 with a line of carefully researched and beautifully drawn rock 'n' roll comic books. Harassed by the stars he profiled, Loren won a landmark victory against New Kids on the Block in 1990 when a U.S. district court judge ruled the comic books were not band merchandise but unauthorized biographies and therefore protected free speech. Overshadowing all this is Loren's unsolved murder two years later; a closeted homosexual, he was found stabbed to death in his bed, and some think he may have been an early victim of serial killer Andrew Cunanan. With all these strange elements in play, director Ilko Davidov really can't go wrong, though he makes gratuitous and increasingly awkward use of video footage Loren shot to promote his mail-order company. 76 min.
