Chewing the scenery isn't enough for Al Pacino; as a high-rolling Manhattan sports tout, he actually chewed through the screen and ate my popcorn. Matthew McConaughey plays his new protege, a college football has-been with an uncanny talent for handicapping games. It turns out to be the perfect job, allowing him to spend his whole workday stripped to the waist and pumping iron in a wood-paneled office. Rene Russo (looking terrific in her 50s) costars as Pacino's wife, and a good thing, too—if she weren't around, the two leads would probably start slapping oil on each other. D.J. Caruso (Taking Lives) directed this silly but enjoyable drama, a notable entry in the big-swinging-dick subgenre. R, 122 min.
